Why Slowing Down in the Garden Builds Hope: A Therapeutic Horticulture Journal

Behind the Scenes at Daffodilly: Nature-Based Healing Farm | January 2026

January at Daffodilly has been quieter, slower, and deeply intentional. Behind the scenes this month, I’ve been leaning into rest that doesn’t look like stopping altogether, but rather moving through my days with more presence, care, and hope.

From small, mindful moments to sowing seeds in the heart of winter, this season has been about tending both the garden and myself—trusting that what’s happening beneath the surface will bloom in its own time.

Garden journal: Slow Growing

Resting for me doesn’t look like lying in bed for days (even though I do daydream about it – with a nice nature view).

It means finding pockets in my day to go slower in. Throughout the day, I am intentional about moving slowly. For example:

    • Sometimes, when I pour my cup of tea, I pause and notice the steam rising from the kettle as I pour it into my cup. I think about the herbs that are about to fill my body and how my body will receive them.
    • Another way I am slowing down in the garden is by pausing to write about it. Using this beautiful junk journal my dear friend gifted me, I’m able to bring words to the nurturing nature that does within my heart, mind, and body!

    Sowing Seeds for Hope

Some big life happenings are going on behind the scenes that have required a new layer of faith and hope. Because of this, I have turned to sowing seeds more than I ever have before during the winter months.

This is why I love therapeutic horticulture—it bridges the gap between nature and humans and asks us to be intentional about our connection with one another.

I asked my farm, what do you need tending to? because I need hope. So I chose activities that would provoke hope for both me and my garden. My garden needs hope too—it doesn’t have many early spring flowers in the soil yet and would love to feel the hope of what’s to come.

This is my GO TO nature-activity when I need to fill my heart, mind, and body with HOPE.
